In Marble Blast Ultra you were a ball (duh), but the camera was zoomed in reasonably well, even more than Monkey Ball, which makes the game slightly disorienting. But in reality it was abstention, it was Marble Madness – something I had played to death on the old NES – which also spawned classics like Monkey Ball, Neverball, and Switchball. It was itself a sequel to Marble Blast Gold, which was in the first salvo of games on Xbox OG. If you’ve never played Marble Blast Ultra, you’ve probably played a dozen games who wants it. But Marble Blast Ultra lingers in memory for its multiplayer scrambles and the fury of chasing the best times per level, all in the service of obtaining that 200G. These games they all have a place in my heart for different reasons: I could probably still remember every beat of Rave New World on Boom Boom Rocket, and I’ve had too many embarrassing encounters with bearded men on Uno. So in my backlog there was Boom Boom Rocket, Geometry Wars, Hexic HD, Luxor 2, Uno, and Marble Blast Ultra.
But the silent cheap transaction games for Xbox Points, we didn’t really want to spend the money. I was buying games that I would never have bought on record, I would never have paid voluntarily in a store.

But all of a sudden we had a service pumping games weekly, available for download without a disc, by the gods, and – most importantly – with a sweet and sweet 200G attached.Ī strange switch flipped in my head. Of course, that wasn’t a new thing – the Xbox OG had Live Arcade, albeit with the crazy obstacle of ordering it on the site Xbox official and receive it in the mail. Imagine, then, what it felt like when Xbox Live Arcade arrived. It really shouldn’t have been motivating for someone who saw themselves as a functional adult (and in today’s grand scheme of ailments, it seems trivial), but it was actually an exciting time to play.
Gamerscore was a precious commodity, and there was little of it games around to increase your total.
